Hydrolysis

Hydrolysis, also known as water cremation, is legally possible in Scotland and we look forward to being able to deliver hydrolysis funerals once a facility is available.

Also known as water cremation, hydrolysis is the newest funeral offering in the UK.

Hydrolysis uses an alkaline solution which is applied to warm water in a pressurised chamber. The temperature of the water is raised but does not reach boiling point. The hydrolysis process combines the water, warmth and alkalinity to support and accelerate the body’s natural breakdown.

It’s considered more gentle than flame or burial and has a lower carbon footprint overall.

The timescale is broadly the same as a cremation. Other similarities include the return of powder, like ashes, which are returned to families for scattering, interring or storing in an urn, casket, jewellery or other keepsake.

Whilst it is legally possible to offer hydrolysis in Scotland, we await the operation of a facility to provide this as a funeral option.  For families wishing to plan ahead, it’s possible to choose hydrolysis in Plans of Wishes or Prepaid Plans, or to leave your preferences with family members in a more informal way.
